Brides and grooms beware! Have you experienced the great ghosting? No, I’m not talking about things that go bump in the night, but rather a lack of communication from wedding vendors. Ghosting in general means to ignore someone’s attempts to communicate. Ghosting can happen in relationships, but it can also happen when it comes to business deals or other types of interactions. As someone that has experienced this firsthand, it can be frustrating!
Let me tell you my personal experience. I recently moved to afford myself more warehouse space. I have spent months calling concrete contractors all over the area, but no progress has been made. Why? I get ghosted! Most don’t even bother to return my calls. If they do call back, they give me some excuse as to why there’s a hold up and tell me they will put me on a list. I do not want to be on a list! I want the work done in a timely manner, and I want you to respond to me in a timely manner.
So, what can you do as a bride or groom to prevent getting ghosted by wedding vendors? If you are going to DIY your wedding planning, here are my tips to prevent ghosting:
- Research your vendors ahead of time. This can be done by reading reviews online or asking for recommendations from friends or family members who have been married recently.
- Make sure the vendors you reach out to are licensed and insured. You can ask to see their proof of insurance.
- Get everything in writing! Once you have decided on a vendor, make sure you get a contract that outlines what services will be provided and when they will be provided. This will help to hold the vendor accountable if they do not deliver on what was promised.
- Beware of “friend referrals”! What does that mean? Friends will often refer their friends just to help them out, but that doesn’t mean they’re the best at the job. It never hurts to ask, “Is this vendor your friend? Have you worked with them before? Do you know where I can find examples of their work?” At Weddings of Pittsburgh, our list of preferred vendors are professionals that we’ve worked with many times. We have confidence they will OVER-DELIVER – just like us!
- Keep tabs on your vendors. If you are not working with a planner, it is important to check in with your vendors periodically to make sure they are still on track. This can be done via email, phone call, or text message.
